Jeff Olsen with his 8 lb 6 oz beauty

Terry and Mitzi,
Jim Boals and I had a great trip. What a beautiful facility and the staaff treated us like kings. The fishing was relatively slow and only two were caught over 10 lbs during the three days we were there. My biggest was 8 lbs 6 oz. A very nice fish. Our three day total was 52 fish with 2 over 8 lbs, 2 over 7 lbs, and 3 over 6 lbs. The waster was very low adn locals had hundreds of gill nets in the water (they took them out our last day) which may have contributed to a lower catch. Most of the other anglers reported similar numbers although a few had better successes. We had a great time and look forward to going again. Thanks for all your help in getting us there. Attached is a picture of my 8 lbs 6 oz fish

I and my brother caught 150+ fish in 3 days. Two at 11 pounds, 3 at 9 pounds, 5 at 7 pounds, and the rest between 1.5 and 4.5 pounds each. What a great trip and wonderful people!! I would  recommend it to anyone. I also met the owner while I was there. I have already booked the first week of May 2002 for 4 people.

Alan Martin

General comments:

We committed a lot of our time to plastic baits. Weather changed the fishing after day 1. We caught 5 over 7lbs. first morning using Silver w/black flake sluggo's. We were getting ate up with fish and we missed a lot of hits. Next day we switched to 10" Power Worms (Blue Fleck) and 8" Lizards (Black w/blue Tail). We had a lot of success fishing cover with these baits. After 3 outings am/pm/am we had all of our big fish for the trip. We had a hard time getting a big fish on the last day. I will say that on the 12th of January, 17 fish over 10lbs. were caught (amazing). I am glad my buddy, David Maserang was one of the anglers with a fish over 10, or I would have been humiliated. We had a great time fishing this lake. We laughed about it today, both of us are still feeling the urge to set the hook while at work. For anglers who have never been, it is easy to get so caught up in trying to land the big one that you do not relax a lot. The scenery is some of the best around! The eagles were amazing !

Best lures were: black sluggo with gold flakes (8+"), white sluggo, black worm with blue tail (10"),  june bug color worm, large pop-r topwater,  suspending shallow running lures (gold or shad color), white spinnerbait. We had 2 guides, one was very good, the other was ok. Boats were good.
Weather was very good, not too warm.

My son and I went in for the first three days of cast and blast. The hunting was great. Need say no more. We immediately caught fish when we first arrived. Top water was very active and we used Sammy's almost exclusively. My son killed me the next day on Blue Fleck 10" power worms. I tried lots of different plastic baits and caught fish on most of them. The best colors were blue fleck, black, black/blue tail, watermelon, and green pumpkin. There was very little crankbait action until the wind came up and jerk baits were excellent. Sluggos in white and white /silver sparkle were excellent. The boats were good. Our guide was excellent and we had a lot of fun fishing with him. He worked his bottom off trying to get us on fish. Weather was great-80's.One front came through. Terrific time fishing.

Lures that worked best were spinner baits, Zoom 8" worms, Zoom flukes, Pop-R type lures for top water and 10" Power worms.

The guides were excellent, but did not speak much English. Our guide did a lot of pointing.

The weather was great with lows in the morning around 60 and highs in the lower 80's. A heavy hooded sweatshirt was great in the morning, but we fished most of the day in shorts and short sleves.

Bookers Comments:

Terry Rader did an excellent job of keeping us informed with periodic updates.

Sorry for being so long getting this fishing report out. This is the week I was at the Lake. This report only represents about 14-15 anglers. At the last minute a group of 16 canceled to go to Lake Comedero. I cannot imagine why anyone would want to drive two hours past Lake El Salto, stay in a lesser quality lodge that requires an armed guard be with you at all times, even when you are fishing, and not have the same quality fishing. It rained every day we were at the Lake, putting the Lake on a rise and caused it to get murky in some areas. The quantity was down some, but the size was incredible as you can see from the report from Anglers Inn below. I caught the 14.6 which is my lifetime best and my fishing partner Creighton Pickering caught the 13.8 which is also his personal best.

General comments:

Top water bite was slower than expected but some fish were caught on double
prop type stick baits and Zara Spook. The most productive bait by far was
the citrus colored Fat Free Shad but the gray green colored one seemed to do
just as well. Most of our time was spent cranking off points in 10-20' of
water in and around tree tops. We had great accommodations and service from
an experienced friendly staff that definitely knows how to please you.
Weather conditions were a little unseasonable as a front with thunderstorms
moved through effecting fishing conditions for one day

Outfitters Comments:

Very organized. Couldn't imagine anything different. They seemed to do
everything right and they had all their I's dotted and all their T's crossed.
I don't know what they could do to make it better.

All caught on 10 inch Berkley power worms. Dark colors worked best. The guide I used was terrific and the equipment was more than adequate. The weather was superb - cool in the mornings and evenings with temperatures reaching into the 90's during the day.

I have fished in Mexico for years and this was without a doubt the most successful trip I have ever had. I set two records. The first was aggregate weight for five fish of 57.7 lb for one day. The second record was 104.4 lbs for 10 fish for one day.

This experience was beyond belief. I have always caught big fish on Lake El Salto. This trip was unlike anything I have experienced anywhere in my fishing career. This was the type of experience bass fisherman dream of and few experience. I shall never forget this incredible experience.

Outfitter comments:

Undoubtedly, Anglers Inn is the BEST there is. Nothing goes unattended. Nobody does it better. The service and quality are unparallel. You will not be disappointed.

Lake El Salto is the bass fishing experience of a lifetime. I just don't know how it could get any better.

Some top water early for smaller fish then it was 10 inch power worms and 3/4 ounce fat free shad crank baits.
Some guides were better than others but for the most part all were above average. There was only one guide we were totally dissatisfied with and he was sent home.
The count on the fish between 5 and 10 pounds may be low because everyone was catching so many 6, 7 and 8 pound fish they lost count. 19 of the 22 people caught the biggest bass they had ever caught on this trip. One of the three that that did not was Dr Tim Bray who caught a 14.4 pound bass last year on this trip.

Outfitter comments:

Billy Chapman has put together a great team at Anglers Inn and is sitting on the best bass lake in the world right now.

Some info for the trip that might be helpful to others:

The fishing starts each day after breakfast at approx. 5:40 a.m.. The temp. each morning ranged from 47* to 51*. The first two hours were spent using topwaters and all of our success was on the smaller Pop-Rs (lighter colors). We had some luck with the black baby torpedoes. I heard some of the fishermen complain that they were "wasting" time with the topwaters. Personally, I found it very productive and we caught plenty of fish with lots of size. We would eventually switch to crankbaits (shad/blue) and these were also productive. After one to two hours of crankbaits we would switch to worms and lizards for the rest of the day. I used 7 inch green/chartreuse lizards exclusively ( #4 hooks and 3/4 oz. sinkers) and had constant action. My son used red and purple 7-9 inch worms and also had great action. The wind picked up significantly in the afternoon but was never a big problem and provided relief from the 90* heat. At the end of two of our three days of fishing we spent the last hour with topwaters. Lots of fun but not as productive. The most productive baits, by far, were the worms and lizards. The early morning topwater was great fun. There were no biting insects but sunscreen is a must.
My son caught his big fish on a 7 inch purple worm, #4 hook, and 3/4 oz. sinker. He was using 20 lb. test line. This is amust, as you know, because of all the timber. We probably lost at least 5 fish in the 7-12 lb. range because they got tangled in the wood.

Comments to Booking Agent:

Terry,
I just wanted to drop you a note to let you know how our trip to El Salto
Lake went. The lodge and people exceeded all of my expectations. I found
them all to be genuinely concerned that we have a good trip. The service and
hospitality was excellent! The fishing was outstanding. My son caught an
11.0 and he is still excited. We will get a replica made. In addition we
caught a 10.0, 9.7, 9.5, 9.3, 7.8, 6.7, 6.6 and a host of other bass that I
previously would have referred to as "lunkers". In total we caught 209 bass
in three full days of fishing. Thanks for the assistance and I look forward
to going back.
