Terry, We fished last Thurs, thru Sat, the first time I have not stayed with your lodge in the past 6 trips to the lake. I want to say the accommodations, staff, boats, and food were all first class. Although the numbers were down from previous trips about 70 to 80 fish a day for our boat, the size of the fish was much better. Our guide Jesus knew the lake and where the better fish were, and also was a great guy besides. He also saved some really good holes for the last day, and we caught big fish in all of them. We had our best fishing in the morning and evening on top water, and Senkos, jigs and lizards any time of the day off the points when the wind blew the fish bit. We hit one big flat hump 3 days in a row two or three times a day and would see 3 to 7 pound fish cruising looking for Tilapia. It was one huge dinner table for the fish. Of the 220 or so fish we caught we had 70 to 80 fish 3.5 to our largest 6.9 and most were 4 to 4.5 clones. The top water bite the last night before dark was like nothing I have ever seen in 35 years. We caught 25 fish in the last hour and had 4 to 5 pound fish fighting over your Sammy if was even in the water 5 seconds you would have fish blasting it. The largest that night was a 6.9. It was incredible. Great time I will definitely be back to your lodge.
Sincerely, John Huscroft

Randy Holly reported excellent numbers of Bass in the main lake and not much action in the Canyons....Topwater only good late but the fluke action for fish up to 6 pounds good all day with 6 inch swimbaits good for bass up to 9 pounds in the TacoPaco/Crues area. Lions Cove and The Clear Creek also doing good for shear numbers with some in the group catching fish over 100 per boat

ur 1st morning was slow by Huites standards as we adjutments were made for post-spawn fishing. We then started fishing a productive pattern that produced countless fish in the 2.5 to 5 lb range. There were many smaller fish and enough larger fish to keep it intersting. My buddy Ron's largest was an 8 lb and I caught a 10.2 lb. These were huge females who had already spawned. Morning and evening topwater bite was good for the first and last hour of the day. White flukes and small crankbaits were VERY effective following the morning topwater bite. As the day heated up we fished deeper with large crankbaits, swimbaits and texas rigged plastic. Senkos and spinnerbaits played a role in rounding out the action. Mike Knight

Wow! What great fishing - just what Huites is supposed to be all about. Some days, it's a little slow, but when it's hot, it's red hot!
Aaron Gore with a group of four who flew in Private to Choix called after the trip saying he was skeptical of the reports he had been reading, only to report that the fishing was actually better than the reports and offerred to talk with anybody that wanted the facts about Lake Huites and Lake Huites Lodge. The fishing was just fantastic. some days catching over 200 bass in a day. Vernon Grizzard's group of four, who flew in in their private jet, on the last day reported excellent results, with multiple 6, 7 and 8s, most on topwater. And of course, using big Senkos and 6 inch swimbaits. Gale Goodman's group of ten just reported 10 lbers caught this morning by some in their group, topwater and Senko fishing excellent, all boats catching between 70 and 80 fish per session.

It was great to get back on the water at Lake Huites, the most beautiful lake in Mexico. Just as the lodge had been reporting, I got to experience some red hot action. It seems as though numbers of fish could be caught almost anywhere on the lake. I personally had my best catches up the Rio Fuerte. Topwater action even in the middle of the day sure was a lot of fun. We are having plenty of fish caught, some boats catching well over 150 per day, with a lot of small fish but we have seen plenty of 6, 7 and 8 lb. fish with a few 10 lbers that we haven't seen with any regularity since 2002. Fran Drexler from Pennsylvania reported catching more 5 lb fish than he could count. His group of six all reported the same type of results. Ronnie Wilkins' group of four all caught fish at rates unheard of for a couple of the novices in his group. It is just amazing the numbers of fish from one end to the other at Lake Huites. With our new private service into Choix, it makes Huites much more acccessible. Although we are sold out for the remainder of February, we have room Spring Break week in March and we hope to see you down there! Group of 14 anglers from Japan fishing the 18th to the 24th had excllent results fishing topwater only with fish up to 9 pounds. Aaron Gore who flew private into Choix.......reported 150 fish days for the boats in his group topwater and swimbaits. Vernon Gizzard just now on the water already have great results on topwater

We just returned from another great trip to Lake Huites. This was our best yet. As usual the accommodations were excellent , the staff was friendly, and the food was great. We really appreciate the great work that Narlin does as camp manager, and that Manuel does as head guide to put you on fish. Now for the fishing report… A few disclaimers: I admit, I have read through some of these reports thinking ‘that can’t be true’. Let me assure you it is. The fishing is so good here; there is no need for exaggerated fish stories! We use tally counters to make sure we keep an accurate count and typically weigh every fish over 5 pounds, as we have friendly bets going among our group. There were four of us. We had the lake all to ourselves, and our understanding was that it had not been fished in a few weeks. It had rained for three straight days before we arrived, so the lake was pretty muddy. Our first day, both boats in our group caught 101 and 102 (a slow day by Huites standards). You can get spoiled pretty quick fishing in Mexico. We caught some good fish, but 50 - 60% were less than a pound (dinks). We were a little worried that it was going to be a slow bite throughout the trip. The next day the fishing picked up to about 150 per boat. The highlight of this day was when we had a great topwater bite in the middle of the day. We had about an hour stretch where we pulled in a bunch of 3 to 6 pounders on chrome chugbugs. They would only hit it standing still on a slow retrieve, but they were killing it! My brother-in-law and me caught back to back 6 ½ pounders. Mine exploded on the bait like a peacock bass, and his jumped completely out of the water and came down on top of the bait. I have never seen anything like it. Other than that exciting run, the topwater bite was slow. The next day we were determined to find the big ones. One of the boats decided to only fish deep holes (20 to 30 feet). Those are hard to find without a graph, but these guides know the lake so well it doesn’t take long to find the “honey holes”. On the 3rd day, the size of fish increased dramatically. We did another 150 per boat with hardly any dinks caught. A ¾ ounce, white spinner bait is what did the trick. We were working up one bank where I caught four, 5 pounders in a row. They absolutely mangled the spinner bait, so bring plenty of extras. Our last day of fishing, I will never forget. We continued on the pattern of fishing deep holes with swim baits, lizards, and spinner baits. We had a good morning of fishing, and we were looking forward to a lunch on the lake shore. We had about two hours to kill before lunch, so we decided to get out of the sun and fish up one of the canyons. We were pitching towards the banks with sinkos catching dinks, but meanwhile my brother-in-law was still working in 30 feet of water fishing a spinner bait on the bottom like a worm. All of the sudden, I hear him yell out “NEW HONEY HOLE!” We proceeded to catch 3-6 pounders on just about every cast for the next 2 hours. My dad caught 48 fish on 48 casts, and that was before he started counting. We were fishing 5” storm swim baits (bunker color). Cast it out, let it go to the bottom, start reeling and you had one on. We caught fish up to 8 and ½ pounds in that spot. My father-in-law was casting a swim bait that was so chewed up, it was basically a hook and weight, and he was still pulling in fish on nearly every cast. We then had our lunch on the shore with an incredible view of a waterfall off in the mountains. Fresh fish and hand cut fries. What a great time. The staff really made my dad feel special on his birthday. The fish sure cooperated too! We went back to the same spot and for 3 hours, literally caught one on every cast until it was time to head back for camp. One boat ended up with 276 for the day, and the other boat was not far behind that number. The hot baits were 5” Storm swim baits (bunker); ¾ ounce white spinner baits; watermelon and pumpkin seed lizards; watermelon candy Flukes, Senkos; tequila and junebug worms; and chrome chugbugs. I can’t wait to come back next year.
Thanks again,
Neal Ford

Terry, This was my 16th trip to your lodge on Lake Huites. Once again the service was excellent and the Lodge in my opinion more beauiful than ever. In comparing this trip to all the others I do think the trend is very favorable for getting the lake back to producing the gaints of 5 years ago. We landed many fish in the 9 pound range but nothing over 10. I did however hook one that was a 10 plus, but I failed to get it in. It does seem the over all quality of fish has improved just since the fall of 2006. We could catch over 120 per boat per day with no problem. The second canyon held the most fish but they seemed to be a little smaller, the first canyon held the bigger fish. Up near the dam has a good population of bass and they seem to be the biggest fish in the lake, but they are holding in much deeper water 20-30 ft of water. We did have some topwater action but only in the morning. I look for the topwater action improve as the water warms into the 80's .

SUN, SUN, SUN, SUN..........and MORE SUN. It was our first time to any Mexican bass lake, but I honestly believe there is not another Mexican lake that would match the beauty of Huites. My wife and I were in awe for 7 days straight. Fishing was a little slow compared to Huites standards, but we found it to be fantastic. I still have a 4" bruise in my ribs from hooksets! My wife would fish with me in the mornings and relax at camp in the afternoons, while Moises (our guide) and I would chase bass all afternoon. We were averaging 80 bass a day, but easily could have had 100 + a day,(per boat) if my wife would have fished the afternoons. The weather was gorgeous, the fish were scrappier than the bass here in Wisconsin. Then there is the staff. Gracilla(spelling?) would bring our coffee each morning to our door at 5 a.m. One black coffee and one with cream. You get back to the lodge at lunch and Monsei (spelling?) grabs your personal items and makes sure you carry absolutely nothing your entire stay. we were met by a pleasant smile and a couple of ice cold margaritas from Gacillia upon entering the threshold to the Papilla. She never missed one margarita in 7 days. Fresh Mexican snacks always awaited us on the papilla. Then after beverages and snacks we were lead to expierience the fine dining indoors. Not one bad meal or bad expierience the entire stay. My personal best fish was just shy of 9 # on the first morning about 9:00, just a few casts after a 6#er. My wife and I caught several 5 to 6 pound fish, with many, many bass in the 1.5 to 4# range. I was a little apprehesive to try this remote Mexican destination because of all of the unknowns. Not anymore. I will return. Please feel free to contact me if you are a first timer and would like any info regarding your stay at Huites. To conclude, I would like to thank each and everyone of the staff at Huites that made our stay enjoyable. I don't have all their names, but Narlin, Manuel, Jessica, Gracilla, Monsei, the chef and kitchen staff, the boat watchmen, the driver, and especially our guide Moises. Moises started out as our guide, and after 6 days in a boat sharing stories and laughter, my wife and I have met another good friend, and I think Moises has found a couple new friends also. If you have any doubts about this trip, contact me at the email provided. I will help you all I can, or better yet, give Cheryl or Terry a call to get your dates booked. DO NOT go through life without seeing this lake at least once. If I had a wish list it would have been to be able to communicate just a touch better with the staff, as we knew absolutely no spanish, and a few of the staff were pretty shy on english. I will be up on my Spanish a little better next time! But for the most part we conquered the language barrier, sometimes with lots of laughs doing it. Thanks again to all of you at Lake Huites. Terry and Cheryl Hollan, you have a wonderful place in the middle of Old Mexico. We will be in touch with our next fishing trip. Sincerely, Jan and Karen Murray

Spinnerbaits and small crankbaits in the canyons being the best for action. Watermelon and pumpkinseed lizards in the deeper main lake points working for the heavier fish. The spring is shaping up very nicely. All coming to Huites should have a great trip.

The average size is excellent with many fish between 3 and 6 pounds being caught. Large numbers of 5 to 8 pounders as well. We have seen more 10 plus pound fish than we have seen in 3 years. This spring of 2007 looks very promising. The recent cold front over Christmas has changed the patterns to mostly senkos and flukes but the numbers of fish being caught up in the canyons is outstanding. 3/8 oz white spinnerbaits working very fast doing good near the timber. I can't imagine HOW GOOD it could have been if the water was clear. I remember Josh & I catching a 5, 5 1/2 and a 6 1/2 on consecutive casts on Friday afternoon on crank baits. Athough the top water bite was off, watching Josh catch bass one after the other on a weighted fluke was something to see. The Lodge and food was great and Narlin and the staff did all they could to make us feel welcome. My guess is with the number of fish in the 6/lb range in this lake it wouldn't surprise me if it's not the hottest bass lake in the world two years from now.

The lake level remained pretty stable and was higher than we've seen in a long time. The water clarity varied from almost muddy the first few days to clear the last few days. Though fish were caught on a variety of baits, 1/2 oz. Fat Free Shad crankbaits were the hottest. Top water action was fair to good up in the "church" area every morning on Ricos. In total, we caught 18 fish over 6 lbs. (verified on digital scale) between the two of us. The biggest fish weighed slightly over 8 lbs. and was caught up in the Fuerte arm. Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of our trip was the number of fish we caught in the 4-5 lb. range. The hospitality was great as usual.

In January, we never threw anything but plastics. Why change when you catch one about every cast? This last week however, crank baits were catching the numbers (all colors, all depths). Each boat in our group caught between 80 and 150 per day. The numbers were down from earlier this year, but the quality of fish was incredible. My dad and I boated more than 20 fish over 5 pounds. He got his personal best at 9 1/2, and I matched (7 1/2) and bettered my personal best twice on this trip with an 8 and 8 1/2. The highlight of the trip was the top water bite early morning and late evening on chug bugs. One thing I will never forget is my dad landing a 6 pounder on a top water and as the guide is netting him, I hang a 6 1/2 on top too! When that slowed, Zoom, pearl colored flukes turned them back on. This is a great trip and I would recommend it to anyone. I can't wait to come back next year. -Neal

All of my favorite spots are now holding fish again. With the water level almost 100%, the humps and islands around Tacopaco and the long points near the dam and of course, our favorite spot, the aquarium, are loaded with fish. Fishing the deeper humps and islands with carolina-rigged worms and 4 inch swimbaits, I found hundreds of quality bass, up to 8 lbs. Two weeks ago, my brother, Narlin, caught one over 10 lbs. at Huites, but today, we only caught fish up to 8 lbs. The canyons, like in the past, are producing fish on almost every cast, but not very many big ones. The lake is primed for a great season and we will see you at the lodge.

Wrote... Up the river to the right side of the lodge they had been slaying them on top waters and flukes. That's how we started but with very little success the first half hour. I started throwing lizards and catching lots of fish immediately but mostly about a pound. After a few shallow areas we went to steep cliffs and from there on started cranking fish like crazy. First with a small Bomber model A in white that ran about 3', then a medium crank and then a deep/big model as the sun got higher and the fish moved out. I had a guy with me bass fishing for the first time and he caught 32 that morning, including a 6.9 and I caught 101. The afternoon bite in that are proved to be much slower Running up the Chinnapas in the afternoon into the second canyon found fish right off on flukes but mostly small. A few lizard fish here and there as well and then I started throwing a rattletrap as we got closer to the back of the creek which produced more and bigger fish. Almost to the back we had a 7' hump surrounded by 20' of water that produced a dozen fish 4-7 lbs. As we went back into the main river channel, we again immediately found fluke fish but no size. Smaller Senko's also produced the same results. Lizards would again catch a few fish but cranking med white/silver cranks would always produce fish quickly. The evening topwater bite was not much better than the morning with poppers but they would smack my Sammy (Jap Spook) quite regularly but I had a very low hook-up ratio. We ended up with about half of what the morning was which was par for the course with all other boats also.

Wrote...Hello, My name is Neal Ford, and I was there for a four day fishing trip that started on January 3rd of this year. I saw our report on the website and wanted to give you a more accurate version. We had an incredible trip. It was everything it was advertised to be and more. We stayed in fish all day long. Between the two of us, in four days, we caught over 600 fish! The large was 7.5lb and next biggest was 7lb. We also caught two 6 pounders and several 4 and 5's. As for tackle, we only fished soft plastics: Zoom 10.5" worms (plum and junebug color), pearl and baby bass flukes, and red shad wave worms (off brand senko) were the hottest baits. I threw every color and got bites on all, but those mentioned above were by far the best colors for us and consistently caught the quality fish. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks, and we are already planning another trip to Huites for the end of this year. Neal Ford

Had a decent top water bite in the afternoon but I enjoy spinnerbaits and they were hitting them all day long. The fish were very aggresive with the better fish trying to rip the rod out of your hand. It looks like the females are just starting to move up to the shallows as some of the larger fish were just starting to show some bloody tails. Would highly recommend this trip to anyone.
