FISHING REPORT UPDATE
March 15th thru 31st, 2004

Air Temp: 68°F (mornings) - 86°F (mid-day)
Water Temp: 72 - 76°F
Average number of bass per boat per day: 40-60
Largest bass caught: 11 lbs

Popular lures used this week:
  1. Kinami Flashes & Yamamoto Senkos 5”, 6” & 7” –Watermelon, Black & Blue, Green pumpkin, Pumpkin Seed, White / Chartreuse.

  2. 8” Lizards - Watermelon, Watermelon with blue flake, Black with Blue tail, Blue flake, Green pumpkin.

  3. Storm Wild Eye Swim Shad 5”-6” – Pearl White, White w/ Chartreuse top, Shad, Golden Mullet.  (5” have been working the best)

  4. Rattletrap - 1/2 oz. & 3/4 oz. - Silver/ with Blue back, Silver/ with Black back, Bleeding Baby Bass

  5. Jerkbaits – 5” – 7” – Silver / Blue, Shad, Fire Tiger.

  6. Spinner bait ½ oz. to 1-1/2 oz. – White, White / Chartreuse, Chartreuse, Shad.

  7. Pop’r s (Rico’s) & Zara Spooks – Silver / Black, Chrome, Clear, Green Pumpkin.

  8. Fat Free Shad & Rapala – Deep and Medium – Citrus Shad, Parrot, Blue Gill, Fire tiger, White

ADDITIONAL INFO:

Most of the big bass are being caught on Fat Free Shads (the citrus color), Carolina rigging 8” watermelon lizards and 5”-6” Swimbaits. The spawn is nearly over and the bass are suspending. The most productive spots have been on the outside of the trees and drop offs into deeper water. The other day, Frank Tabone, landed the 2 biggest fish of his life. The first one came in at 9 pounds and 15 minutes later, the second one at 9-3/4 pounds. Frank caught those fish by Carolina rigging a lizard. That morning, his son George, landed an 11 pounder on a blue swimbait. The swimbait bite is started to come back. If one stays concentrated on catching a monster bass, I believe this is the bait to do it with. There have been many big bass lost on the swimbait because it weighs heavier than normal baits. This enables the bass to spit the bait more often. One must keep his rod tip down in the water and try to prevent the fish from jumping. Deep diving crankbaits and Rattletraps are doing well. This is“better” fish bait. Senkos and watermelon lizards are producing numbers and occasionally fish. We are still fishing the banks and catching many smaller bass but every now and then a big one comes off the bank. The topwater bite has been slow although we did have a 10 pounder come on a Rico Pop’r. Hard plastic jerkbaits have been doing well as has spinnerbaits. Working the jerkbaits with a “jerk and pause” method has seemed to be producing the best results. The weather is starting to warm up as is the lake. The lake is also starting to drop which should increase the fishing from great to fantastic! Florida Strain largemouth are more active when the water temperature is warm to hot.

Water Temp: 70 - 74°F
Average number of bass per boat per day: 40-60
Largest bass caught: 12 lbs

Popular lures used this week:
  1. Kinami Flashes & Yamamoto Senkos 5”, 6” & 7” –Watermelon, Black & Blue, Green pumpkin, Pumpkin Seed, Chartreuse.

  2. 6”-8” Lizards - Watermelon, Watermelon with blue flake, Black with Blue tail, Blue flake, Green pumpkin.

  3. Storm Wild Eye Swim Shad 5”-6” – Pearl White, White w/ Chartreuse top, Shad, Golden Mullet.  (5” have been working the best)

  4. Rattletrap - 1/2 oz. & 3/4 oz. - Silver/ with Blue back, Silver/ with Black back, Bleeding Baby Bass

  5. Jerkbaits – 5” – 7” – Silver / Blue, Shad, Fire Tiger.

  6. Spinner bait ½ oz. to 1-1/2 oz. – White, White / Chartreuse, Chartreuse, Shad.

  7. Pop’r s (Rico’s) & Zara Spooks – Silver / Black, Chrome, Clear, Green Pumpkin.

  8. Fat Free Shad & Rapala – Deep and Medium – Citrus Shad, Parrot, Blue Gill, Fire tiger, White

ADDITIONAL INFO:

We are on the last stage of the spawn and it should be over by the next full moon. Most of the bass are still coming shallow (about 6-12 feet) but the quality bass are coming a little deeper. Up on the banks, the best baits are still Senkos, Flashes and Wave Worm has a soft plastic jerk bait that has been working just as well. They tend to hold together better than the others. The bass that have spawned out go down and suspend for a couple of weeks. This is were the deep diving crankbaits come into play. The Fat Free Excaliber and the DD22 have been producing some nice bass. Also deep spinners with double silver willow blades will catch the monsters as well. The weather has warmed up as has the water temparture. Now that the water temparture has warmed up,  the bass should be even more active than they already are. Hard plastic jerkbaits have been doing well early in the morning and late in the evenings. Most customers are working them with a crank and pause. Pausing the bait for a second and then jerking it again and letting it sit. Watermelon lizards and worms are producing all sizes of bass. Texas rigging in the trees and the areas where there is a lot of structure is the key. Carolina rigging has been better of the flats, humps and cliffs. Swimbaits are still producing big fish in about 20-25 feet of water. We are also fishing the swimbaits of the cliffs and letting them drop slowly. Some nice bass where caught like this and the fish were hitting them on the fall

Pop’r s (Rico’s) & Zara Spooks – Silver / Black, Chrome, Clear, Green Pumpkin.

Fat Free Shad & Rapala – Deep and Medium – Citrus Shad, Parrot, Blue Gill, Fire tiger, White

ADDITIONAL INFO:

There were more bass caught over 10 pounds this report than the last. The spawn is still going on and the most productive bait has been soft plastic jerk worms. There are still two types of fishing. One can fish the bank for the spawning females and catch mostly males with an occasional female in the crowd or fish in deeper water for the bigger bass but the numbers of bass caught will go down. If one is looking for a 10+ bass, you must be focused and stay concentrated on fishing big fish areas such as deep points, humps and channel drop offs with bigger baits such as the Storm Wild Eye Swim Shad, ¾ ounce to 1-1/4 spinnerbaits or Carolina rigging a watermelon lizard. Rattletraps have been pulling in some quality bass. One customer caught 6 bass totaling 40 pounds in 20 minutes on silver with a blue back Trap. Out of the 5 eleven pounders caught this report, 2 came on a pearl swimshad, 2 on a watermelon lizard Carolina style and 1 on a Senko on the bank. Wacky style the Senkos and Kinami Flashes have been producing the best numbers while Carolina Rigging lizards and Swim baits have been producing the big female bass. Hard plastic jerkbaits are doing well up on the bank. A 5” jerkbait in the shad color and also golden shiner will catch some fish.  After the next full moon, majority of the bass will go out and suspend after the spawn. This is when deep diving crankbaits should work well, especially the Fat Free Shad in the Citrus color. There has been little topwater action in the early mornings and late evenings on Popr’s.

FISHING REPORT UPDATE
Febuary 1st thru 15th, 2004

Air Temp: 55°F (mornings) - 72°F (mid-day)
Water Temp: 68 - 70°F
Average number of bass per boat per day: 50-70
Largest bass caught: 12 lbs

Popular lures used this week:

Kinami Flashes & Yamamoto Senkos 5”, 6” & 7” – White, Watermelon, Black & Blue, Green pumpkin, Pumpkin Seed, Chartreuse.

6”-8” Lizards - Watermelon, Watermelon with blue flake, Black with Blue tail, Blue flake, Green pumpkin, Red Shad.

Storm Wild Eye Swim Shad 5”-6” – Pearl White, White w/ Chartreuse top, Shad, Golden Mullet.  (5” have been working the best)

Rattletrap - 1/2 oz. & 3/4 oz. - Silver/ with Blue back, Silver/ with Black back, Bleeding Baby Bass

Jerkbaits – 5” – 7” – Silver / Blue, Shad, Fire Tiger.

Spinner bait ½ oz. to 1-1/2 oz. – White, White / Chartreuse, Chartreuse, Shad.

Pop’r s (Rico’s) & Zara Spooks – Silver / Black, Chrome, Clear, Green Pumpkin.

Fat Free Shad & Rapala – Deep and Medium – Citrus Shad, Parrot, Blue Gill, Fire tiger, White

ADDITIONAL INFO:

The big bass are moving up due to the spawn. Most of the big bass caught have been full of eggs. Many big fish are “slapping” at the top water baits such as Pop r’s and Spooks. The most productive bait of the report has to be 5” & 6” Yamamoto Senkos and Kinami Flashes. We are having the best success by hooking the baits “Wacky Style”. This is when one hooks the Senko or Flash in the center of the bait. This gives the bait more action. During the spawn, we tend to catch more male bass. The male bass guard the nest whiles the big female stays on the nest. The bass here spawn a little deeper than in the states due to the fluctuation of the lake. They often spawn on the top of trees as well. Two anglers in one morning came in with 94 bass, all on soft plastic jerk worms, and 25 of those bass were in the 2-5 pound range. They hit a major school of bass and they said that most of the females were bursting with eggs. Great bait has been a watermelon lizard by rigging it both Texas and Carolina style. The 12 pound bass caught during this report was caught on the Storm Wild Eye Swim Shad in the 5” Pearl color. In the beginning of the month, the big fish were slow and when the lake temperature starting to cool down, the bigger bass started to move up. We have had many 7-10 pound bass caught off shallow points, tree tops and on the bank. Top water fishing has been good for average size bass but most of the big females are not taking the bait. Hard plastic jerkbaits and Spinners will catch some of the bigger spawning female bass. The bottom line is that the numbers of bass being caught is phenomenal and the bigger ones are coming in slowly but surely. Be sure to bring the suggested baits for a better trip.

ADDITIONAL INFO:

We are catching many smaller bass up tight against the bank, especially on Senkos and Pop’r s. The weather this report has affected the fishing dramatically with the temperature of the lake rising and falling from the mornings to the afternoons. It has even fluctuated 4 degrees in a single day. We have had some great days of fishing as well. The big ones are still coming on the Storm Wild Eye Swim Shads in the colors mentioned above. Carolina and Texas rigging 8” plastic lizards have been producing all sizes of bass. Yum makes a new lizard call the “Zellamander” that we mentioned a couple of reports ago. It is a twin tail 8” lizard and has been working great. One of the best colors is watermelon with blue flake. Also plain watermelon is a great color. Be sure to bring plenty of lizards and also Senkos. If one really wanted to, you can catch 80+ bass a day on both of these baits and also some nice quality bass. We did have some more rain this week but only for a day. The bigger ones have been coming off deep points, humps and especially flats in about 8-20 feet of water. The big bite has been slower than normal. The bigger bass have seemed to move towards the surface and we are also getting close to spawning time. Some bass, not many, have been caught with bloody tails. The bass tend to spawn a little deeper here due to the fluctuation of the lake. They have been also known to spawn on the top of trees. The biggest bass of the report was caught by Tony (the lake manager) on a swimbait. Tony also came in with an 11 pounder the same day. The best color for the Swimbaits has been Pearl and also White with a Chartreuse top. Hard plastic jerkbaits have been working well close to the bank. Most people are working them slow and pausing for a second or two

Fat Free Shad & Rapala - Deep and Medium - Citrus Shad, Parrot, Blue Gill, Fire tiger, White

ADDITIONAL INFO:

The bigger fish are still being caught deep especially off deep points, humps and cliffs. The best productive places that our guides have found have been fishing the edges of the channels where the water level goes from 14 feet to 25 feet. The best bait has been the Storm Wild Eye Swim Shad in the colors mentioned above. We are also catching some nice bass on spinners, crankbaits and plastic worm. When one goes for big fish the number of fish that you catch goes down but the quality goes up. We have had customers catching 80+ bass a day on the bank and trowing Senkos, Bass Asasins or plastic jerkworms. Most of these bass are in the 1-3 pound range but an occasional big one will come in close to the surface. Texas and Carolina rigging a 8”-10” worm or 6”-8” lizard has been doing well in deep water. One customer came in with the best fishing day he experienced in his life ending up with a 9, 10, 11 and 13 pounder. All of these bass were caught in the same area and all on a 5” Swimbait in the white and chartreuse color. Rattletraps have been producing both quality and quantity of bass. When the bass are busting on the shad and tilapia, have your Trap ready to throw into the boiling fish. Topwater fishing is good early in the morning and late in the evenings. The late morning and early evenings has been mostly swimsbaits, plastic worms & lizards and crankbaits. ]

Storm Wild Eye Swim Shad 4”-5”-6” – White w/ Chartreuse top, Shad, Golden Mullet, Mullet, Bunker, and Baby Bass.  (5” have been working the best)

6”-8” Lizards and 8”-10” Berkley Powerworms & Yamamoto - Watermelon, Watermelon with blue flake, Black with Blue tail, Blue flake, Green pumpkin, Pumpkin seed.

Fat Free Shad & Rapala - Deep and Medium - Citrus Shad, Parrot, Blue Gill, Fire tiger, White

ADDITIONAL INFO:

The fishing started out slow during the beginning of this report but has picked up dramatically. The eclipse hurt the fishing for a few days but that has past. The Wild Eye Swim Shads are still the Big Bass bait of the report. We are still working them slowly on the bottom. Some of the fish are hitting it on the fall, so one must be very attentive. Anglers are also working the swimbait like a “jerk and pause”. Letting the bait hit the bottom and then jerking it, reeling up the slack (while it falls) and letting it sit for a second. Most of the time the bass will hit it on the fall. Some of the bass have been suspended so crankbaits and Rattle traps have been doing fairly well especially when the fish are feeding on Shad & Tilapia. Some anglers are catching numbers of bass on the banks due to the colder weather on white Flukes, Senkos and pop r’s. The big Rapala Shad Rap has been producing big bass but no numbers. If you keep this in mind – the bigger the bait the bigger the fish but less numbers. It all depends what one is looking for. Most of the fishing is being done right here in front of the lodge in the underwater city of old El Salto. Many big fish has been caught there including a 9, 10 & 11 pounder caught by Gerard Lomas. Zell Rowland was doing well on a new bait called the “Zellamander” which is a 6” lizard. It is a twin tail lizard and the best color was watermelon with blue flake for Zell. The best spots for the big bass have been flats, drop offs and humps in the middle of the lake. Ty Hatch, from Hacienda Harley Davidson, landed an 11-1/2 pounder on a swimbait. Salto is still producing the monster bass that it always produced, of course like any lake in the world; it has its slow days but also has its great days. The lake is starting to drop slightly due to irrigation. This and the cold weather is why the topwater fishing has turned on. Zara Spooks have always been a big fish bait here. Be sure to bring down the suggested baits to ensure you have a better trip.

Largest bass caught: 12 lbs

Popular lures used this week:

6”-8” Lizards and 10” Berkley Powerworms & Yamamoto - Watermelon, Watermelon with blue flake, Black with Blue tail, Blue flake, Green pumpkin, Pumpkin seed.

Fat Free Shad & Rapala  - Deep and Medium - Citrus Shad, Parrot, Blue Gill, Fire tiger, White.

Rattletrap and Ambush Stealth diver - 1/2 oz. & 3/4 oz. - Silver/ with Blue back, Silver/ with Black back.

Flukes & Senkos 5”-6” – Watermelon, Black & Blue, Green pumpkin, Pumpkin Seed, White.

Spinner bait ½ oz. to ¾ oz. – White, White / Chartreuse, Chartreuse, Shad.

Storm Wild Eye Swim Shad 5”-6” – Shad, Golden Mullet, Mullet, Bunker, White w/ Chartreuse top.

Pop’r s & Zara Spooks – Silver / Black, Chrome, Clear, Green Pumpkin.

Jerkbaits – 5”-7” (Yo-Zuri) – Silver, Perch, Fire Tiger

ADDITIONAL INFO:

The topwater fishing is picking up especially on Pop’r s and Zara Spooks. The fish are starting to move up in the morning and evenings. The lake is starting to slightly drop due to irrigation which should get some of those bass out of the trees. The mornings are producing numbers if you plug the bank with Senkos, Flukes or Bass Assassins. The bigger bass are being caught in deeper water of Swimbait and 8” watermelon lizards off deep points, humps, flats and releases. There are two styles of fishing to be done here. One can go for numbers on the bank and usually come in with 30-50 fish a day with the biggest weighing up to 8 pounds. If the customers decide to go for the bigger bass the numbers will go down but the quality of fish will go up dramatically. Hard plastic jerkbaits have been producing some nice numbers of bass as well. Some days have been slow while other days have been great. We experienced an eclipse that may have hurt the fishing for a couple of days but the fishing is picking up. White and Shad color spinnerbaits have been producing some nice fish. The bass are following the Threadfin Shad and busting on them. When we find this happening, we are throwing either Silver / Blue Rattletraps, Silver jerkbaits, Spinners, or shallow diver crankbaits. Senkos or Flukes will catch them as well. Watermelon lizards have been producing the best as far as numbers and big fish. Zoom has a new lizard called the “Zellamander” which has been good. It is a 6” twin tail lizard named after Zell Rowland. He is here fishing now and will let you know how he did in the next report. Jay Yelas participated in our first Anglers Inn University and produced some quality bass and one of his students caught the biggest bass of his life – a 10 pounder – from the techniques that he learned from Jay. They were fishing in deeper water with the swim bait but fishing for suspended bass.

Air Temp: 84°F - 92°F
Water Temp: 78 - 84°F
Average number of bass per boat per day: 20-40
Largest bass caught: 11 lbs

Popular lures used this week:

Storm Wild Eye Swim Shad 5”-6” – Mullet, Golden Mullet, Pinfish, Shad, White w/ Chartreuse top.

Fat Free Shad & Rapala  - Deep and Medium - Parrot, Citrus Shad, Blue Gill, Fire tiger, White.

Rattletrap and Ambush Stealth diver - 1/2 oz. & 3/4 oz. - Silver/ with Blue back, Silver/ with Black back.

Spinner bait ½ oz. to ¾ oz. – White, White / Chartreuse, Chartreuse, Shad.

8” Lizards and 10” Berkley Powerworms- Watermelon, Watermelon with red flake, Black with Blue tail, Blue flake, Green pumpkin, Pumpkin seed.

ADDITIONAL INFO:

We are starting to catch some nice bass on top water – especially on Zara Spooks and Pop’r s. Early in the mornings and late in the evenings the bass are starting to move up due to the change of weather. There is also some good soft plastic jerk worm bites during the same times. After sunrise, most of our fishing is done down deeper on Storm Wild Eye Swim Shads. The 5” and 6” have been producing the biggest fish. Most customers who decide to throw the Swim Shad come in with less bass but the ones that they catch are in the 6-12 pound range. The 4” Swim Shad is the one for catching numbers. We are working the Storm bait the same as always, slow rolling it on the bottom. Spinnerbaits can be worked the same way for best productivity. Sivler / Black Rattletraps have been producing both numbers of bass and quality. The ¾ ounce has been the best so far especially when one finds the shad busting the surface. The bass are spooking the shad to the surface and some nice bass are being caught. The Bill Dance Excalibur Fat Free Shad is still is a great bait to bring down. Citrus Shad is the best color and has been working great off windy points. Most of the big fish are coming in 12-20 feet of water off deep points. The wind is starting to pick up in the afternoons. Some wives enjoying their stay with us on our new “Couple Package” are also taking advantage of great bass fishing along with pedicures, manicures, massages and other activities.

Popular lures used this week:

Storm & Optimum Swimbaits 5”-6” – Mullet, Golden Mullet, Pinfish, Shad, White.

Fat Free Shad & Rapala  - Deep and Medium - Parrot, Citrus Shad, Blue Gill, Fire tiger, White.

Rattletrap and Ambush Stealth diver - 1/2 oz. & 3/4 oz. - Silver/ with Blue back, Silver/ with Black back.

8” Lizards and 10” Berkley Powerworms- Watermelon, Watermelon with red flake, Black with Blue tail, Blue flake, Green pumpkin, Pumpkin seed.

ADDITIONAL INFO:

The fishing has really turned up the last week. All of the the big fish are coming on Storm’s Wild Eye Swim bait in the 5 inch and 6 inch size. The most productive colors have been Mullet and Golden Mullet. Some of the other colors that have been doing well are White, Pinfish (resembles a Tilipia), and Shad. The most successful technique has been working the swimbait on the bottom in about 12-20 feet of water. We are slow rolling the bait and one bairly feels the big fish bite. It is a real soft bite. John Felsher and myself caught 30 fish over 7 pounds on this very bait and Tony, the lake manager, landed two – 11 pounders and a 10. John also had a 10-1/2 pounder. Carlton Viers and son, from the Bill Dance Magazine, and Taylor Wilson caught 10 fish over 10 pounds in their 3 days of fishing with a 12 pounder being the biggest.  Most of these fish came on Swim baits. The amount of quality / big fish that came in these two weeks have been mind-boggling. There are some smaller fish up close ot the banks on Senkos or soft plastic jerkbaits. With the lake being 100% full, the level of the lake is up in the mountains. Most of the smaller ones are in the trees where it is difficult to cast to. We expect when the water level starts to drop, the topwater fishing should pick up dramatically. There has also been some nice bass caught on the Fat Free Shad in the Citrus color as well. Be sure to bring down these baits!

ADDITIONAL INFO:

Lake El Salto has filled up an estimated 25 feet since the end of the  season. The lake still lacks about another 25 feet to be full with many  rains still expected to come. In September, we receive our heaviest rainfall  as always. For the past 13 years El Salto has always opened up with a full  or close to full lake. We recently had 2 good sticks from Arizona, John  Brimhall (The fish Doctor) and Ron Hinkley, fishing the lake. The numbers of  fish that they caught were astonishing. They fished for a total of 4 ½ days  and caught a total of 452 bass. That's an average of 100.4 bass per day. On  their best day they landed 172 bass mostly on crankbaits and lizards. Their  biggest fish was 8-1/2 pounds but they also landed 6 more fish in the 8  pound range. They also had 15 fish greater than the 6 pound range and an  estimated 100 fish greater that the 4 pound range. Most of the bass are  close to the bank hiding in the grass due to the rise of the lake. I believe  that most of the bigger fish are still deep due to the temperature of the  water (89 degrees). We also had ten amigos fishing the lake for the weekend  that were coming in with a little less numbers than the Doctor and Ron, but  were still very good. They did land 4 ten pounders during their stay with us  as well as many fish in the 4-8 pound range. We are expecting to have a  great season with the lake filling up and by the numbers of fish our friends  are catching.

ADDITIONAL INFO:

We ended the season with a bang!   Our 5 fish limit was broken by Joe Bullock who came in with an amazing 66.6 pounds of fish. All of the fish came on black and blue jigs either in the trees or off bluffs underwater. Joe fished for 6 days and had a 10 fish limit of 118 pounds. His top 5 bass weighed 14.7, 14.3, 13.3, 13.0 & 11.3 pounds. Joe’s fishing partner, Jim Tonkin landed 3-10+ pound bass and 2-8+ pounders for a total limit of 48.5 pounds. The fishing has been back to normal Salto fishing. In June, most of the fishing was done in 12-20 feet of water either working jigs, plastics worms & lizards or cranks. Fishing with green pumpkin or watermelon lizards off the bluffs was producing a lot of numbers. We had some customers coming in with 80+ days fishing this way. Senkos started to make a comeback up tight to the banks early in the mornings. One has to be patient while fishing these to give the bait time to sink and working it very slow. The crankbait bite was there during certain hours of the day as well as the swimbait bite. Rattletraps and Ambush Stealth’s have been producing some quality fish as well as numbers. El Salto’s season ended extremely well. Although we had our slow days we have also experienced some world class fishing days. One of the main problems this season was the amount of bait fish in the lake. Talipia and threadfin shad were busting everywhere. This is just allowing the big bass to get even bigger. With nobody fishing during these summer months, the bass will not see a lure in months. We should be back to 80+ days in October. The level of the lake was another major issue. The lake has never dropped down so quickly which freaked the fish out. The mismanagement of the water level led to more offshore suspended bass than ever before, which made fishing challenging at times. Still, a large portion of our customers managed to catch their largest bass of their lives and went home satisfied. New for next season is Anglers Inn University. This is a one-in-a-kind learning experience. Check out our website for more information.

ADDITIONAL INFO:

The fishing during of this report for most people has been excellent. Most of the big fish are coming on Fat Free Shads in the Citrus color in the deep diver and the medium diver. There have been some fish stories of customers landing up to 100+ bass a day in one whole. The fish stack up in spots and when you hit them you really hit them. Most of the customers are finding these fish in about 15-20 foot of water and catching them on the Fat Free Shad. The Storm swimbait is doing its job as well with many big and quality fish coming in on it. The secret is still fishing the bait very slow on the bottom like slow rolling a spinnerbait. It seems like the smaller swimbaits are doing a little better this month than the bigger ones. The best sizes are the 4” and 5” and the best colors to bring are the ones mentioned above. There are also some other good colors, which resemble a tilapia (or bluegill).  Another bait to bring down and plenty of is the 8” Zoom lizards. The best color so far is black with blue tail and watermelon with red flake. Both Texas and Carolina rigs have been producing. In some cases there have been fish busting the surface feeding on shad. When this happens be sure to throw a ½ ounce to 1 ounce Rattletrap in the silver and black back color. This is where one can rack up some numbers. Matt Lipscomb came down with us with a party of 14 and here are some of the numbers that they caught. There top fish was 12 pounds and they had a total of 30 fish over 8 pounds including 7 over 10. That’s not bad for a group of 14 guys fishing 3 days on the lake. Matt kept intense records for us and had a total of 141 bass over 4 pounds and 111 over 5. One of the best stories of the season has to be that of Todd Watson. Todd and his father,Tom, one morning hit the right spot by landing 96 bass out of one whole. The biggest that they had was 12 pounds and Todd’s top 10 fish weighed 93-3/4 pounds. They caught all of there fish on a Fat Free Shad in the citrus color. Here is Todd’s quote “ I fished on May 21 with my father and we caught 6 bass over 10 pounds before lunch. Unbelievable”. Granted not everybody is going to have the same success as these two lucky fisherman but you have you best chance at Lake El Salto. The lake is at a low point now, which is why the fish are stacking up. We are expecting a good rainy season this summer, which will let us start out with a full lake in October like the past 13 seasons.

ADDITIONAL INFO:

The fishing is really turning on! There has been a lot of big fish caught shallow and deep mostly on 6” Storm Swimbaits in the Mullet and Golden Mullet color. Be sure to bring them!! Fishing this bait is easy but one needs patience. The fisherman are fishing it on the bottom and very slow. So slow that you can barley feel the tail wiggling. The bite is as soft on the swimbait as is on plastics and spinners. The number one bait this report is swimbaits but crankbaits are right behind it. The Rapala and Fat Free Shad are producing some nice bass. Fishing these cranks very slow is the key. Crank the bait down fast and then a slow retrieve. The same deal on the spinnerbaits. These are fished just like the swimbait. Soft plastic jerkbaits are doing well in the morning and late in the evening. There is some topwater bite during the same period but not much. Still bring down you topwater gear because you never know. The biggest fish of the report was caught by Rob Grill on a swimbait. It was a whopping 13 pound bucket mouth. There were many 10-12 pound bass caught during this period.  I think that one of the reasons is that the lake is at a low level and the fish are stacking up. I have heard stories of a customer catching 20 bass over 8 pounds in one hole in one fishing session, so I went out with him in the afternoon and we caught (or had on the line) about 8 very quality fish. One loses a lot of fish on the swimbait so if you hook one you better get your rod deep in the water to help to prevent from losing it. We landed about 6 fish in the afternoon from 6-9 pounds out of that same whole. El Salto is definitely picking up for the amount of big fish being caught. Not everyone is going to land a lunker bass but you have you best chance with us here at El Salto.

ADDITIONAL INFO:

Some great news this report, the nets have been taking out for the rest of the season. This should make the fishing pick up dramatically. The biggest fish of the report is a 12- pounder and Warren Finn landed an 11 -pounder a day after his 14th birthday. Warren’s fish was caught on a Senko. The topwater bite has been slow due to the heat. Most of the big fish are going deeper and being caught in about 15-30 feet of water. The lures that go deep are working the best such as plastic worms & lizards, crankbaits, swimbaits, jigs, and heavy spinners. The most productive baits now are plastic worms and lizards in the black with blue tail and watermelon color. One can still catch some fish on soft plastic jerkbaits early in the morning and late in the afternoon. The level of the lake is down quite a bit but that just makes the bass concentrate more. Deep diving crankbaits have been productive for the people that are willing to throw them all day. It is a difficult task to throw that monster crank but it is definitely a good search bait when the fishing gets slow.  Cranking the bait down as soon as it hits the water and retrieving it very slow has been the key.  Most of the bites have been soft especially on plastics, spinners and jigs but not on cranks and swimbaits. The Rattletrap in the silver with black back and silver with blue back has been producing some numbers as well as big fish. It is getting about that time for some serious jig fishing. If you are headed down, be sure to bring plenty.
